I went to an area of geological interest where they labeled fossils in the rocks. That helped me a lot. fossils for dummies. :) -

If you're driving around in an unfamiliar area, the Roadside Geology books are pretty good. They usually tell you what you're looking at (rocks, formations, etc.) mile by mile.
Love the labeling of the fossils in the rocks! Would help me a lot with mammal fossils -- I'm good with trilobites and dinosaurs, but mammals? I'm completely lost. ;) -

Or riding a bike!! I rode around Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta and I think there is a park in Colorado where you can explore dinosaur fossils by bicycle. There is also a restaurant there that serves dinosaur eggs.
I see you are in an interesting area. The university of tx /austin has a good geology website with maps. Can you design a fossilicious bike tour?
I dont live near many fossils but i like fossil books like ISBN 1-56458-074-1 which i found in the childrens section of a bigbox bookstore. well it has lots of pretty photos.
